State Board of Education CANDIDATES FORUM for District 6
Thursday, October 25, 2012 – 7 pm
Paul Revere Middle School – 10502 Briar Forest (West of Beltway 8)
We wish the State Board of Education race was as important as the Presidential Race. Since education is locally controlled in each state, please make this a priority in your decision-making list by joining us at a forum on Thursday, October 25th at Revere MS. You will have the opportunity to learn about this governing body and hear how the district 6 candidates plan to improve education in Texas. Candidates for District 6 include Donna Bahorich, Traci Jensen and G.C. Mollison.
The State board of Education (SBOE) is very influential. It determines what every student in Texas public schools must learn from kindergarten through high school graduation, including approval of curriculum and textbooks. Since Texas adopts textbooks statewide, this decision determines what textbook publishers will print and this also impacts the entire nation. There is a saying in education circles that says, as Texas goes, the nation goes.
Members of the Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) are elected in partisan elections decided during the state’s general election cycle. All 15 seats on the board are on the ballot this November because of redistricting. District 6 encompasses Harris County- west of I45. Despite the importance of these elected positions, information about candidates for the state board has traditionally been very limited. Our branch intends to help rectify this situation.
If you would like to ask a question or share comments for the candidates, please complete the Google form at: More information about AAUW-WHC can be found at Information about the SBOE can be found on the Texas Education Agency webiste,
